Arguably, the Speedgoat is Hoka’s first technical trail shoe. Sure, the Mafate has been in the line since day one, and it’s a trail specific shoe. However, that shoe is just so big that I have a hard time calling it a technical trail shoe. The Challenger and the Stinson ATR’s are road shoes with a little more traction. The Speedgoat is something entirely different. With an appropriately aggressive Vibram outsole and a low profile (by Hoka standards), the Speedgoat runs in a very nimble yet highly cushioned manner. Whether you’re running across soft, pine-needle covered trail or loose, jagged rocky terrain, the Speedgoat is the new go-to trail shoe from Hoka
With one 7 mile run on the shoe, I opted to wear the Speedgoat for a near 40 mile run near Mt. Rainier a couple of weeks ago. They were on my feet for nearly 12 hours of very technical terrain, and my feet could not have felt better. The Speedgoats will be taking care of my feet at next weekend’s Cascade Crest 100.
