Song of the Open Road

We all have someone in our life that doesn't understand running; someone that just can't seem to grasp why we do it. And perhaps that's our fault, because quite frankly, none of us can really explain why we get out there, no matter the weather, day in and day out-the words we try to use to explain it are fleeting, because it seems nearly impossible to sum up how it makes us feel ("strong and content I travel the open road...all seems beautiful to me"). How do you tell someone that you can go anywhere, be anything, while you are running?-that you are the best version of yourself when you lace up and head out ("I am larger, better than I thought; I did not know I held so much goodness"), and that you are your only border, your only stop sign. Perhaps you let them watch, and listen to, this Volvo commercial, which features "Song of the Open Road" by Walt Whitman:

"The east and the west are mine, and the north and the south are mine." But only when we're running; so get out there and log some miles already, even if you still can't explain why you're doing so.
