Maurten was developed in 2015 in the pursuit of making sports fuels easier to digest. They accomplished this by combining high concentrations of natural carbohydrates in a hydrogel. The hydrogel dissolves slowly which helps to prevent GI distress and many people may tolerate this better than other high sugar sports fuels.
What is a hydrogel and how does it work?
A hydrogel is used widely in the food industry in a number of different ways. In Maurten's Sports Drink, they've found a way to build hydrogels using natural ingredients, including carbohydrates. The hydrogels in Maurten come from Alginate and Pectin, which are both sourced naturally. When these are combined and mixed with water, it creates a pH-sensitive hydrogel. It is a colorless, almost flavorless, slightly sweet liquid. Once the liquid reaches your stomach, the acidity in your stomach causes the liquid to convert to a hydrogel. When the hydrogel reaches the intestines, it is slowly absorbed by the body.
Maurten is made with five natural ingredients:
-
Maltodextrin (Carbohydrate source)
-
Fructose (Fruit sugar found in many plants. High relative sweetness)
-
Pectin (Commonly extracted from citrus fruits and is used as a gelling agent)
-
Sodium Alginate which is derived from brown seaweeds.
-
Sodium Choloride (Salt)
How do I make the mix?
Mix either the Drink Mix 160 and Drink Mix 320 in 500ml of water. Consume before, during and/or after activity. Consume mixed product within 1 day. It is best to mix with water with low concentrations of minerals, especially calcium, as this makes the mix harder to dissolve.
What is the difference between the Drink Mix 160 and Drink Mix 320?
The primary difference between the two products is the concentration of carbohydrates and the slight difference in salt. Since both packets are mixed with 17oz/500ml of water, you will be consuming the same volume of liquid, but with a different carbohydrate ratio.
Drink Mix 160
- 40g
- 39g Carbohydrate (13 g Sugar)
- 0.4g Salt

Drink Mix 320
- 80g
- 79g Carbohydrate (33 g Sugar)
- 0.5g Salt
- 320 Calories
Give Maurten a try. If you've ever struggled with GI distress, this might be the answer for you. Elite and amateur athletes alike are finding that Maurten is making a huge difference in their performance.
