DeWitt, N.Y. — Building a community with their business is a priority for Ed and Ellen Griffin, co-owners of running shop Fleet Feet Syracuse.
It's a message they pass along to the numerous employees they've mentored over the years.
The store and the Griffins are a force in the Central New York running community.
They're involved in organizing the annual Syracuse Half Marathon, Runapalooza 5K at Onondaga Community College, Alexa's Friends Run 5K at Onondaga Lake Park and the Six-Legged 5K, also at Onondaga Lake Park.
Ed Griffin is one of the organizers of the annual Mountain Goat Run in Syracuse. The store has training programs for runners at all levels and its own racing team.
The business is a partner with Saucony, C&S Cos. of North Syracuse and the Syracuse Parks and Recreation Department in the annual Syrathon Race Series. The seven-race series, which showcases the city's parks, covers a total of 35 miles.
It includes the Tipperary Hill Shamrock Run, Mountain Goat, Paige's Butterfly Run, Valley Nature in the City Run/Walk, Inner Harbor 5K, Strathmore Parks Run and Eastwood Park-to-Park Autumn Run.
Fleet Feet Syracuse sponsors and hosts packet pickups for more than 50 events every year.
The business has earned national recognition. Competitor and Running Insight magazines named it the best running store in the country in 2012.
