Liverpool, N.Y. -- Fleet Feet Sports in East Syracuse hosted a 5K run/walk this morning with the winner being the Central New York SPCA.
The Six Legged 5K was established in 2009 as a way to bring awareness and support to the local SPCA. Back then, the local animal shelter was in danger of closing its doors.
Each year, all proceeds have gone to the SPCA. The event has raised more than $28,000 during the past five years.
The race was untimed. The 3.1-mile course took runners out and back on East Shore Trail on Onondaga Lake Park, starting and finishing at the Saw Mill Pavilion.
Runners and walks were encouraged to cover the distance with their four-legged friends.
The SPCA provides shelter for animals as well as pet care education, adoption, low-income spaying, neutering and vaccines, a pet food pantry and animal cruelty investigations.
