Starting Location: Dr. Edmund A. Babler Memorial State Park, 800 Guy Park Dr, Wildwood, MO 63005
Parking: there is a lot near the Visitor Center where we will start and finish. Not very big, but there is another lot over by the large Monument that is just before the Visitor Center (can't miss it on your right). If those fill up, the road is wide enough that we may be able to park along the curb - just DO NOT park in the grass anywhere (they have signs for no parking in the grass). Car pooling is highly encouraged if you can!
Run Description: SHORT COURSE = 1 Loop / LONG COURSE = 2 Loops
See maps below!
Both courses will run the same first loop together. From parking lot by Visitor Center, we will follow the road back by the tall monument heading North for roughly a 1/4 mile till we hit the trail on our left. Turn here and then make a RIGHT onto the Equestrian Trail (BROWN trail markings). Follow this just over a 1/2 mile till you can turn LEFT onto the Dogwood Trail (GREEN trail markings). At the next split stay to your LEFT on the Dogwood and then STRAIGHT as it crosses an Equestrian Trail (WHITE trail markings). Shortly after this you will see a parking lot off to your right and the trail now becomes the Woodbine Trail (BLUE trail markings), stay on this trail. After roughly a 1/2 mile you will turn LEFT to stay on the Woodbine Trail and make your way up the hill side to start a short 1.1mi loop back to this point. Roughly another 1/2 mile or so you will come out on the Equestrian Trail (BROWN markings), turn RIGHT and just a short ways after that you will hit a paved trail. Turn RIGHT to head down a steep descent as you stay along the Woodbine Trail (BLUE). Near the bottom of the hill you will make a RIGHT turn back onto a trail to follow the Woodbine still (BLUE). Stay STRAIGHT and to the LEFT at the next split (this was where you turned to head up the hill, now you will be back tracking trail you have been on already making your way back to the Dogwood Trail). The trail turns back into the Dogwood Trail (GREEN) and keep STRAIGHT at the Equestrian Trail crossing. Shortly after that you will now make a LEFT turn to stay on the Dogwood Trail (GREEN markings). Once again, cross over the Equestrian Trail to stay on the Dogwood (GREEN). In roughly a 1/2 mile stay RIGHT at the next split (if you go left, it spits you out at a parking lot, dead end). About another 1/4 mile after that stay RIGHT again at the split (another trail spur, if you go left it takes you out to the road). Approximately 1/4 mile after that one, stay STRAIGHT on the Dogwood (GREEN) as the Equestrian Trail (WHITE) overlaps briefly. At the 4-way intersection, stay STRAIGHT to remain on the Dogwood Trail (GREEN). You will follow this trail roughly another 1/2 mile up to the top where it overlaps the Equestrian Trail (BROWN markings) and you will turn LEFT. Stay on this trail for roughly 1 mile passing up a trail on your right (Dogwood Trail that you ran down in the beginning) and the trail on your left (the way you came in from the road at the start near the Monument). Eventually you will want to make a LEFT turn to stay on the main Equestrian Trail (BROWN markings) - if you miss this turn you will be on the other Equestrian Trail (WHITE markings) and heading down a steep hill....don't go this way! Following the main Equestrian Trail (BROWN) you will have roughly 1.1 miles till it takes you back to that paved trail from before. This time you will turn LEFT and go thru the stone tunnel. After that, you will turn LEFT on the Virginia Day Trail (RED markings). Once on this trail, the next split you will stay RIGHT and follow this for roughly .8 of a mile to the next split, stay RIGHT and head up the short hill and it spits you out across the road from the starting point. Loop 1 is FINISHED! MILEAGE = approximately 8 miles
Those going LONG - refuel if needed, then head back out for loop 2 by going back over to the Virginia Day Trail that you just finished from loop 1. At the first split, this time turn RIGHT to take the trail you did not run before, and shortly after that you will make another RIGHT to stay on the trail marked by the RED markings, and then another RIGHT shortly after that. If you miss that it is just a shortened trail that connects up to where you want to go. At roughly .8 miles into your loop, you will make the RIGHT turn onto the trail which takes you back up to the paved path (may be a sign for Equestrian Trail connector). Once at the paved path, turn RIGHT and then shortly after that turn LEFT onto a gravel path - this is BEFORE you go through that tunnel...if you go under that you missed it. Once on the gravel path, just stay STRAIGHT and you will see that you are back on the Equestrian Trail (BROWN markings) as you go by a gravel parking lot. You will take this for roughly 1.2 miles till you see the Hawthorn Trail on your LEFT (YELLOW markings), turn here. A short ways into this trail you will make a RIGHT turn and run this bubble counter-clockwise returning to this point, then make the RIGHT to head back up to the Equestrian Trail (BROWN) and turn RIGHT again and head back the way you came to the finish - this is basically an out and back loop. TOTAL MILEAGE = approximately 13.2 miles
