Starting Location: Dr. Edmund A. Babler Memorial State Park, 800 Guy Park Dr, Wildwood, MO 63005
Parking: there is a lot near the Visitor Center where we will start and finish. Not very big, but there is another lot over by the large Monument that is just before the Visitor Center (can't miss it on your right). If those fill up, the road is wide enough that we may be able to park along the curb - just DO NOT park in the grass anywhere (they have signs for no parking in the grass).
Short course = 2 loops (~5mi)
Medium course = 3 loops (~8.5mi)
Long course = 4 loops (~11.2mi)
See map below!
Everyone will run the first and second loop together. Start off from the parking lot crossing the street and entering the trail on the "Virginia Day" trail which is marked by RED trail markers. For the first 0.6mi of this loop make every RIGHT turn till you come to the intersection that also has a YELLOW trail marker - this one turn LEFT to follow the RED arrow...this will then loop you back around towards the start, simply keep RIGHT to head back up the hill to the parking lot to complete loop 1.
Loop 2 will start the exact same way...only this time when you see the trail marker with the YELLOW arrow, turn RIGHT - this will then take you out to a paved path, make a RIGHT turn on that and follow it thru a short tunnel. Just on the other side of that you will see the "Equestrian" trail on your RIGHT - turn on that and follow that for awhile (it will be marked by BROWN or WHITE trail markings). The trail will take you down a steep hill, then wind around and back up another good climb, towards the top of that climb you will make a LEFT to head back down another hill for roughly a quarter mile, then you see where the "Dogwood" trail crosses the path - turn RIGHT here where you will see the GREEN arrow trail markers for "Dogwood". Once on that trail you will make another RIGHT turn at the bottom of a hill, this will then wind around and head up a short but semi-steep climb where it rejoins part of the "Equestrian" trail...turn RIGHT here and take this till you can make a LEFT for a cut through out to the road. Once on the road make a RIGHT turn and follow it all the way back to the parking lot - it is roughly a quarter mile to the lot. That completes loop 2 and the SHORT COURSE is finished!
Loop 3 is for those going MEDIUM and LONG only - it will start the exact same way you just finished loop 2...so head back out on the road towards the cut thru to the "Equestrian" trail, then turn RIGHT on that and follow it till it rejoins with the "Dogwood" trail. This time just keep STRAIGHT and to the RIGHT as the "Dogwood" and "Equestrian" trails overlap for a short period. Eventually you will see a GREEN arrow marker to make a RIGHT turn off the "Equestrian" trail, turn there and follow GREEN arrow markers for awhile. There will be ribbon out to help, but there are a few spots where there are trail spurs from the main path - if you look closely at the arrow markers along the way you can see where they lead - stay on the ones for "Dogwood". After you have passed the trail marker spur for the "Spring"....you go a little ways further and then you return to a spot you ran on loop 2 - turn LEFT here and it is the short but steep climb back up to the "Equestrian" trail, turn RIGHT and finish up this loop the same way you did on loop 2. MEDIUM course is finished!
Loop 4 is for those going LONG only - you will start this one heading back out the way you just finished loop 3....only this time once you get off the road and back on to the "Equestrian" trail you will turn LEFT. Take the "Equestrian" trail all the way down the hill...you will pass one trail on your left....do not turn there, keep STRAIGHT. You will make a LEFT on the 2nd turn you can make which will be another portion of that "Dogwood" trail with the GREEN arrows. This takes out towards the trail head for this path where you will see a parking lot off to your right....keep STRAIGHT and the trail switches over to the "Woodbine" trail marked by BLUE arrows. Stay on this path and keep to your LEFT with the BLUE arrows. You will eventually go up a long steady climb and then it spits you back out on the "Equestrian" trail just before that tunnel you ran under way back on loop 2. Once on the "Equestrian" trail, turn RIGHT and it takes you out to that paved path where you will turn LEFT to head up and thru that tunnel once again. After the tunnel keep STRAIGHT till you can turn LEFT on to the "Virginia Day" trail with RED markers. After this simply make EVERY LEFT turn you can all the way back to the parking lot and you are done!
