Starting Location: Lost Valley Hiking Trail, Lost Valley Trail, Defiance, MO 63341
Parking Information: The parking lot for this trail head is not marked but is roughly 6 miles off of Highway 94 heading southwest from Highway 64/40. Drive past Francis Howell school, Lewis & Clark trail head and the Weldon Springs Katy Trail entrance. Once you have gone by a Law Enforcement Training facility you go down a hill and the parking lot will be off on your right, it is a gravel lot.
Course Description: 2 loops @ ~6.5 miles worth each loop
From the parking lot we will head out along the old fire road which cuts up the middle of the park. At roughly a half mile in you will need to turn RIGHT to stay on the fire road and this will start your long gradual uphill till about the 2 mile mark. Keep STRAIGHT all the way up and keep to the fire road as it eventually curves to your RIGHT and goes back down. At roughly the midway point of the loop you will make a RIGHT turn onto a grassy path where you will also see several power lines...follow those heading south. The trail eventually winds back up into the woods and then you cross a creek, continue following the single track trail back to the old fire road, make the LEFT turn and now you simply head back to the parking lot which is roughly 3/4 of a mile from this spot. Refuel if needed before heading back out.
The 2nd loop we will run the same as the first, only in reverse...so when you get about 3/4 of a mile into it you will make the RIGHT turn onto that single trail and head towards the creek crossing, then along the power lines back to the fire road, turn LEFT and then simply follow the fire road all the way back to the start - your final 2 miles will be down and flat. Don't worry about the other trails out here just yet....we will hit those up the next time. :)
