Starting Location: Rockwoods Reservation, 2751 Glencoe Rd, Wildwood, MO 63038 (trail head)
Parking Instructions - When entering the park, drive all the way towards the Visitor Center (building will be on your left with a long parking lot) - our start/finish point will be closest to the building (near a stop sign) - if that lot fills up there are a few smaller lots near by that you can use and then meet us over by the building.
10K = 2 loops for 5mi / 3 loops for 8mi
13.1 = 3 loops for 8mi / 5 loops for 11mi
See map below!
Everyone will start off with a short 1.5 mile run out along the Green Rock Trail (get our most technical one out of the way early while we are fresh) - the turn around will be right before one of the nastier up hills along this trail for those who have been on it before....there will be several PINK flagging to mark this spot. Turn around there and head back to the parking lot. 3 miles done.
Everyone will then run the 2nd loop which is even shorter at 2 miles in length, going on the Rock Quarry Trail which compared to the Green Rock will offer much better footing as it is a bit wider with a surface more similar to that of the Katy Trail/Al Foster, just with some inclines. There is some single track mixed in on the northern side of this trail. Once this loop is complete the 10K group is done. If anyone in that group wants to hit the medium course than you have one more loop to go.
The 3rd loop is just over 3 miles roughly in length, and is our "longest" distances of all the loops today. Start running on the Trail Among the Trees which can be accessed across from the Visitor Center near the stop sign. It begins as black top but then quickly heads up some steps and turns to dirt trail. You hit a little more black top as you ascend one of the hills and then we will turn LEFT to take a cut through over to the LIME KILN TRAIL (there will be flagging). Take this trail and once on the Lime Kiln turn LEFT and run it clockwise....you will have roughly a nice long, gradual descent if you go the right way.....if not, you will get a sharp and rocky descent going the other way (we are avoiding this direction as the footing can be pretty rugged in spots). Once at the bottom you will run by the old Lime Kiln and the trail stays flat for a way. Once you come to a "Y" split, go LEFT (the actual trail would go right here and start your ascent back up but we are not running that way) - by going left you stay down alongside the road and will eventually spit out on to it, follow it back to the cars to complete the loop. Those in the 10K group who wanted more mileage are now done. The 13.1 group have 2 more super short loops to get the 11 miles total for the day.
The 4th loop is simply a repeat of the 2nd loop along the Rock Quarry Trail for another 2 miles.
The 5th and final loop is a short and sweet 1 mile - take the short cut behind the Visitor Center and go up the steps, then at the top you rejoin the Rock Quarry Trail, go LEFT and take the long hill back down to the parking lot to finish. You are done!
