Starting Location: Lost Valley Hiking Trail, Lost Valley Trail, Defiance, MO 63341
Parking Information: The parking lot for this trail head is not marked but is roughly 6 miles off of Highway 94 heading southwest from Highway 64/40. Drive past Francis Howell school, Lewis & Clark trail head and the Weldon Springs Katy Trail entrance. Once you have gone by a Law Enforcement Training facility you go down a hill and the parking lot will be off on your right, it is a gravel lot.
10K = 1 loop (1 loop for short course or 1 loop for medium course - choose one or the other) - ~6.4mi or ~9mi in length
13.1 = 2 loops (~9mi loop and then 4mi out and back loop, ~13mi total)
Everyone starts off together for about 3/4 of a mile before those going the SHORT course will turn RIGHT onto the single track trail, while the MEDIUM and LONG courses will go a little further then turn LEFT on the single track trail.
SHORT course = this loop will will run counter-clockwise, taking the single track trail for a ways, then it comes out along some power lines and follows a grassy path up to the gravel road. Here you will turn LEFT and start a gradual up hill climb. Simply stay on this old fire road the rest of the way (when you are just over 2 miles out from the finish you will see where the others who went MEDIUM/LONG will rejoin you). The final 2 mile stretch is all down hill and flat back to the parking lot.
MEDIUM/LONG course = this loop you will run in a clockwise fashion. The first single track trail you follow for just shy of a mile before hitting a gravel road again, turn RIGHT on it. You take this a little ways before getting back on some single track trail which you will be on the next several miles as it twists and turns with some fun up and down hills. Near your 7mi mark into the loop you come out on the old fire road which is also where you may bump into some from the SHORT course, turn RIGHT and simply take this all the way back down to the parking lot, your final 2mi of this loop is downhill and flat. Those in the 10K group who wanted more mileage will run this loop instead of the shorter one. Those in the 13.1 group this is your first of two loops, refuel if needed and then head back out for a much shorter out and back run that is not as hilly as this first one.
LONG course = this is the 2nd loop for those in the 13.1 group. You will run the same as the SHORT course loop, only once you hit the 2 mile mark out you will then simply turn around and head back the same way you just came. This keeps you primarily on the single track portion. The turn around will be marked with BLUE flagging, which will be a little ways after you cross the bigger creek crossing and BEFORE you come to the power lines section.....if you hit those then definitely turn back around as it will be a bit longer than 4 miles at that point total.
