Under Armour Gemini 3 RE Review

Under Armour is creating some shoes that are “out of this world”, in inspiration at least. The Gemini 3, Velociti, and Europa all share a space-inspired name *cue Daft Punk synth solo*. Admittedly, Under Armour hasn’t been on the forefront of most people’s minds when they think quality running shoes. So what’s changed? For starters, the company is integrating some pretty interesting tech into their shoes in the form of Record Equipped. Technology relating to running has historically revolved around foam, rubber, and fabric. But this is 2017, and now we have shoes that tell you how hard you should run based on a Jump Test. Yeah, you heard me right.

 | Who would love this |

From first-adapter technology enthusiasts to serious distance runners and walkers, the Gemini 3 provides a gateway to useful running data without the commitment and added complication of a GPS watch. If you’re anything like me, you really care about what went on during your run. Sometimes that beat up Timex with the sticky buttons just doesn’t cut it. This new Record Equipped (RE) Technology allows the Gemini 3 to automatically sync with Under Armour’s MapMyRun app to capture GPS metrics, real-time stats (time, distance, cadence, duration, splits), and to top it all off, they give you an MVP membership to MapMyRun, for a year, for FREE.

 | Tech |

The thing that sparked my interest with UA’s new shoes was, you guessed it, the tech. The global running community found within MapMyRun exists as a way for runners to connect. With this supportive community, your hard work won’t go unnoticed, and you may even earn bragging rights.

The Jump Test gives athletes a way to categorize their muscle fatigue by measuring the average airtime between a series of jumps. This is meant to track the athlete’s recovery over time and offer insights into how hard they should push themselves on any given day. For example, if you spent between 300-400 milliseconds in the air, the app may suggest that you’re a little fatigued, and it will give you a recommendation based on that. However, it learns from you constantly, and your readings will be adjusted over time as it becomes more accurate the longer it is in use.

Did I mention the shoe will never need to be charged during its expected life? On top of that, you really needn’t worry about whether or not your run was tracked or captured. The shoes will automatically declare the beginning of a workout after you run below an 11-minute mile. And they will automatically end it after you stop. All you have to do is sync the shoes with your phone via bluetooth after your workout. Alternatively, you can take your phone with you and see your stats in real time via the MapMyRun app.

 | Overall Experience |

Upon slipping on the Gemini 3, I immediately felt the direction Under Armour wanted to take with it. They drastically improved the cushioning and overall experience found in the previous iteration of the Gemini. The shoe is very responsive in the forefoot, yet cushioned in the heel. I could see this shoe performing well for heel strikers and forefoot strikers alike. The upper has a nice form and feels great on the foot. For a neutral runner seeking a responsive shoe with ingenious tech integration, this shoe just makes sense.

  | Fit |

Overall, this shoe yields a form fit that hugs you where it should, yet gives you space where you need it. In other words, it’s the perfect friend. The heel of the Gemini is not the traditional plush collar and soft lining. This shoe features a thin, molded heel cup that feels natural around the back of the heel and Achilles. The upper is a breathable, engineered mesh that moves with the foot while still locking you in. The toe box gives you plenty of room for your toes to splay and the overall fit of this shoe lends a light, relaxed, and comfortable experience.

 | Sizing |

This shoe fits true to size, no wacky sizing here. If you’re unsure, one of our FIT experts can take measurements of your foot and tell you without a doubt what size will work best for you!

 | Final Verdict |

Under Armour has tooled, refined, and revitalized wearable tech in footwear to bring the new generation of shoes to us. I couldn’t be happier. For runners who want to extend their reach and learn more from their runs, this shoe is an obvious choice. You simply slip on the Gemini and run, everything else is taken care of. The shoe will automatically record your workout for you, no prompt required. If this idea sounds cool but you aren’t sure the Gemini is right for you, simply come into our store and try it on for yourself. We hope you will, and you’ll be happy you did.
