I love coffee with a passion

(I’m drinking it as I write this). It helps release ideas with caffeine-induced spurts of creativity and I honestly don’t know how I would have gotten through my first year of college without it. Coffee is part of my morning ritual. It starts with a solid run, then coffee, then breakfast, then more coffee. It seems to be synonymous with running culture all over the world. Many tout its benefits pre-workout as a way to *clears throat* get things moving. Whatever the case, sometimes that little caffeinated kick is exactly what you need to lace up your running shoes and push yourself out the door.

 It’s amazing to me just how much it can affect your mood as well. Coffee is packed with antioxidants that fight cancer and Alzheimer’s, it’s proven to enhance alertness and motivation, and a recent study found that women who drank two to three cups of coffee a day were 15% less likely to develop depression. Long story short: If you want to live better, drink coffee.

Coffee For Running

Many studies have come to the conclusion that coffee can improve performance in just about any athletic activity. However, it is the most effective when timed just right. Researchers agree that its best to intake a cup about an hour before your activity to reap the most benefits. Contrary to popular belief, coffee doesn’t actually dehydrate the body, as many people perceive. And most interestingly, you may not even need to swallow it to reap the benefits of the caffeine. A study published in the journal Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism found that your mouth might be able to detect the presence of caffeine and boost your performance, even if you spit out your drink.
