Oberlin Village in Raleigh, North Carolina, holds profound historical significance as one of the earliest freedmen's communities in the South. Established in the years following the Civil War, Oberlin Village became a haven for newly emancipated African Americans seeking autonomy and economic independence. Founded by formerly enslaved individuals African Americans, he community thrived as a center for education, entrepreneurship, and civic engagement. The establishment of schools, churches, and businesses within Oberlin Village played a pivotal role in fostering self-sufficiency and social progress for its residents.

However, in the face of urban development and expansion, Oberlin Village has experienced erosion, with the landscape changing over time. The encroachment of modern development poses a threat to the preservation of this historic neighborhood. Efforts have been made by local activists, historians, and community members to raise awareness about the importance of Oberlin Village and to advocate for its preservation. These preservation initiatives aim not only to protect the physical structures and historical landmarks but also to ensure that the stories and legacies of the individuals who shaped Oberlin Village continue to be acknowledged and celebrated.

Join us for a guided run tour through the historic neighborhood with stops at sites of historical significance along the way. The run is free and open to all ages. In order to get through each stop and complete 3 miles in a timely manner, we will aim to keep an approximate 10-11 minute pace.
