Whether you are running before or after work, chances are it’s dark outside. Safety is always a major concern for runners, especially during the holiday season when we lack daylight, traffic is heavier and drivers more distracted. Think about a visibility and reflectivity routine just like you would a hydration and nutrition strategy.
A headlamp will illuminate the terrain ahead of you so you know what to expect, while a handheld flashlight will identify objects immediately in your path. An LED vest won’t light up your route, but it can help motorists see you much sooner. Reflectivity also accomplishes this, while having the added advantage of being built into the apparel or accessories you are using. A good practice with reflectivity is to focus on your extremities (hands and feet or ankles), as it has been shown that drivers more accurately identify an object as a person based on the gait cycle.
