Last week, one of our new Fit professionals asked what the letters behind my name stood for. After explaining each certification, a more experienced Fit pro proffered an insightful question. “Out of all of these, what do you use the most?” I had to be honest. “What I most use is what I’ve learned from self-study and application.” In essence, the official credentials are simply a professional validation of an existing skill set.
This is important to recognize as we identify two new Fleet Feet Running Club Coaches, and highlight their experience in their respective domains. Technical proficiency is important, but it is practical application that is most impactful. A knowledge base is only as effective as the ability to implement in a real-world scenario. Good coaches need not only to understand their craft, but have a good bedside manner. Credentials are easily tossed around, but the weight that “letters behind the name” carries is only as useful as how an individual effectively connects with people and shares their knowledge.
Both of our newest Fleet Feet Running Club coaches carry the necessary credentials, but they also have years of experience applying it in a day-to-day environment. Textbook proficiency is inherently self-limiting, but the nuances of actual experience are invaluable. I hope you will join me in welcoming Coach Jon and Coach Victor as established professionals, and value the insight they are able to provide in order to help each and every one of us achieve our personal goals.
