During the late stages of a training cycle, motivation can be hard to maintain. We’ve lost the energy and enthusiasm of tackling a big adventure, we’ve put our heads down and worked diligently through the build in March and we are all ready for a break in the weather indicating that spring is here to stay. With the race still a month away it’s a little too early to get excited about it, and runners often find themselves in the “doldrums” right about now.
As we put the finishing touches on our training, it’s important to remember that mood follows action. It may become more and more challenging to find the inspiration to lace up and get out the door, but as we all know, everything is better after the first mile. If you find that it takes a little longer to loosen up and start enjoying the experience, it’s actually a good sign that you are in the right shape to compete in a distance event. Sometimes it takes the better part of a 5K to really get in the groove.
Just as the brain can pump up the body for a hard track session, sometimes the body needs to prime the brain for a recovery run. Keep your motivation high by doubling down on the habits that got you here in the first place. Remember, the only run you regret is the one you don’t take.
Run well,
