Overland Park shares in Kansas City’s bounty of running routes, clubs and community. While here you can choose from a variety of urban paths, crushed gravel roads and technical dirt trails that will challenge even the most committed to try and run them all.
Looking for a race? Overland Park and the surrounding community of Kansas City boasts everything from track meets, marathons, ultrarunning races and trail running events. After your refuel at one of the many coffee shops or breweries, and eat your fill of world class barbecue.
The weather is generally mild most of the year although the summer can get quite hot. In summer months, be sure to check the forecast and plan to start early in the day as the temps heat up. Winters are mostly mild but keep an eye out for the occasional cold, windy days that will make running uncomfortable without the right layers.
Feeling social? There are many running clubs in town to join for weekly run or workout, and they frequent all the best places to run in Overland Park:
Kansas Square
- Best for: short runs, walks.
- Surface: sidewalk
- Starting Point: Fleet Feet- Overland Park 11908 W 119th St
- Overland Park, KS 66213
- Distance: 4 miles or less
Route Description: Start on the sidewalk in front of Fleet Feet Overland Park. This is the "Kansas square" so expect a lot of right turns. This route is also very flat, beginner friendly and good for when daylight is limited. Head West on 119th St. to Pflumm Road. Take your first right and head north and take your second right on College Blvd. Take a third right and go east until Quivira Road. Take your final right and go south until you hit 199th St and the finish!
Indian Creek Trail
- Best for: long runs
- Surface: asphalt
- Starting Point: 119th St. and Quivira Rd.
- Distance: 23.7 miles
Route Description: This is a point-to-point, mostly flat trail with less than a 5 percent grade at any point.
Start across from Fleet Feet Overland Park. This is approximately halfway between the start and finish, meaning you have plenty of trail to explore in either direction. Head out for whatever distance you need for your run that day and don’t forget to tell us how it’s gone in the store?
Shawnee Mission Park Violet and Red Trail
- Best for: trail running
- Surface: trail
- Starting Point: parking lot, Shawnee Mission Park Mountain Bike Trail
- Distance: 6.0
Route Description: This is a slightly technical loop trail with some rocks and roots (it’s also decently hilly, so be ready to climb). The trail winds through lush forest with occasional, sweeping views outside of the trees. One important note: mountain bikers share the trails here, so be sure to follow guidelines, and be respectful of all trail users.
