Hydration with Noel
With Summer in full swing, temperatures are rising everywhere and so is the need for hydration. Whether your exercise of choice is running, yoga or weight lifting, it is likely that you are losing more water than you are taking in on an average day in this heat. Water makes up between 45–75% of a person’s body weight and is stored in both the muscle and fat tissue. Water acts as a transporter of nutrients, regulates body temperature, lubricates joints and internal organs, provides structure to cells and tissues, helps to preserve cardiovascular function and aids in weight management. The average adult loses 2 whole liters of water per day, with the loss increasing to nearly 3 liters when the adult is exercising regularly. Dehydration can impact both physical and cognitive performance if we are not making water intake a priority in our wellness routine.
One of my favorite ways to replenish the ~8 cups of water that we lose daily is with morning electrolytes. Studies show that we lose the most water when we are 1) sleeping and 2) exercising…so the best times to add electrolytes to your filtered water intake are when you first wake up in the morning and before/during physical activity. When choosing an electrolyte product, make sure that there are no added sugars or sugar alcohols. Some of my favorite brands are LMNT, Cure, and good ole’ lemon + himalayan salt. Add one pack to your water daily and see how your optimal health improves!
Happy sweating,
Noel
Mother's Day Homemade Granola Recipe
Mother’s Day was this month and it was an opportunity for some of the strongest and most inspiring women in our lives to be celebrated in a special way. My love for cooking and learning about nourishing ingredients is the product of generations of women in my family who held food as a love language in the best way. A visit never passed without the offer to try a bite of some fresh baked goods, a new snack food or dinner leftovers.
Mrs. V’s Homemade Granola is a staple recipe in my mema’s kitchen. In honor of Mother’s Day this month, she has given me the opportunity to share it with you. I hope that it will become a part of many memories made and moments enjoyed with the special mom’s in your life, too.
Nutritionally speaking, this recipe is a great way to incorporate more protein, healthy fats and fiber into your routine without having to do a lot of additional meal prep. Coconut oil can be substituted for avocado oil to reduce the total fat content if desired.
