Mentors are the heart of our training programs. In this role you support beginners, returning runners and walkers as they reach goals they may never have thought possible. You are a motivator, a cheerleader and a steady presence in someone else’s running journey.
You do not need to be an expert.
A mentor volunteers their time to support participants through encouragement, accountability and positive energy. What matters most is showing up consistently and caring about each participant’s journey.
What We Ask of Mentors
1
Show up
Attend at least 75% of group workouts. If you cannot make one, let the head coach know as early as you can.
2
Carry a phone
Keep a cell phone on you during every group workout, with the head coach’s and the store’s contact information saved.
3
Know the route
Review the running or walking route your coach provides before each workout so you can guide the group confidently.
4
Talk to people
Take time to mingle before and after workouts. The connection you build is most of the job.
5
Account for everyone
Help make sure every participant is accounted for. If someone needs to turn back early, a mentor goes with them. One mentor is typically assigned to stay at the back of the group to support anyone who needs extra help.
6
Be visible
Wear visibility gear for evening and low-light workouts.
7
Set the tone
Bring positive energy, encouragement and motivation. The group takes its cue from you.
