How to Give Back
Heather Bechtel, MD
I love our community! Locally and globally, runners and walkers are some of the most generous, authentic people you will meet. As the year winds down with big races followed by big holidays, I think about how I can give back. Altruism benefits both the community and your own brain. So here are some suggestions for how to get those good vibes going:
- Volunteer at races: for smooth operations, races need volunteers. But do not let that feel like an obligation. Handing out water, medals, or packets can all be a fun way to take in the race atmosphere!
- Race for a charity: nothing can supercharge your next training cycle like racing for a cause! From specific charities like Nationwide Children’s, to charity bibs at a wide variety of races, the options are endless.
- Donate or volunteer to bring others into the community: Girls on the Run and Let me Run are great organizations for kids who are always looking for coaches. Outrunners, Black Girls Run, and many others are both celebrating current members and trying to bring our sport to more people who may not yet feel welcome.
- All the small things you do to support those around you. Birthday celebrations, congratulations, meals and check-ins when your pace buddies are sick.
As we look at this season of gratitude, I am so grateful for our MIT community and all of you. From the pacers, to coaches, trainers, physical therapists and many friends, YOU make our community great.
