Our History

Our roots run deep in running, community, and local ownership. In 1976, Sally Edwards and Elizabeth Jansen opened the first Fleet Feet in a well-worn and well-loved Victorian house on J Street in Sacramento. Their commitment to providing a place where every runner of every level could find inspiration, motivation, and know-how created the brand DNA that exists today in every Fleet Feet across the country. Over the years, this DNA evolved in powerful ways thanks to strong leadership, indomitable resolve, and a commitment to serve.

Here is our story.

Fleet Feet entered the scene in Colorado at the tail end of 2021, combining 2 powerful histories in Run Specialty. Boulder Running Company was founded in 1996 by running legends Johnny Halberstadt and Mark Plaatjes. The original location, still standing on Pearl St. in Boulder, was a trailblazer in Run Specialty for many years. Boulder Running Company was the first store to bring in what was once an anomaly and is now the best selling brand in all of Run Specialty, HOKA. Boulder Running Company was the first running store in the country to be awarded “Running Store of the Year” in 2006, which is now an uber competitive and sought after award every year. Over the years, Boulder Running Company has raised countless dollars for our community, hosted countless group runs, supported hundreds of local races, and so much more. Community was, and is, at the forefront of every decision that we make.

Merging these two dynamic and forward thinking companies continues to be a force in the running community locally and nationally. We continue to offer up to 20 group runs and events per week across the Front Range, support many local businesses, and ultimately strive to be a key pillar in Boulder, Denver, and Colorado Springs’ running communities.
