Frequently Asked Questions
1. Can I train for my first marathon, half marathon, or 15K if I’ve never run before?
Yes! Many of our participants start as beginners. With commitment to our structured training program, most people can finish their event. (Marathon participants should have a base of 6 miles.) We’ll place you in the right group to help you succeed.
2. I don’t know anything about gear, diet, or training—will I learn?
Absolutely! Clinics cover shoes, socks, nutrition, training techniques, and body care. Experts guide you step by step, often on Saturdays after group runs. You’ll learn more than most runners know before the program ends.
3. I’m worried I’ll be too slow to keep up.
Speed isn’t the goal—finishing is. Our groups are large enough that you’ll always be with people at a similar pace, and walking intervals are included in some programs.
4. Can I join late?
Yes, up to a month after the program starts. After that, it’s too difficult to safely catch up. Even a week late can work if you stay committed.
5. How long is the program, and when/where do you meet?
Full and half marathon programs run 16 weeks. We meet Tuesdays at 6:30 PM and Saturdays at 7:00 AM at Fleet Feet Sports. You’ll also get a full weekly schedule to run independently. Longest workouts are Saturdays, and clinics follow the runs.
6. What if I miss a Saturday run?
Missing a run occasionally is fine. Let the Head Coach know, and you’ll get guidance to make it up safely. Consistency is key, especially for long runs.
7. What if I feel an injury coming on?
Your safety is our priority. Most participants stay injury-free, but bumps happen. Our partner, Oxford Physical Therapy, provides screenings, seminars, and care for any issues.
8. The Flying Pig Marathon is hilly—can I run it as my first marathon?
Yes! All marathons are challenging, but our program will prepare you for Cincinnati’s hills. It’s a well-run, supportive first marathon experience.
9. Can I ask questions before signing up?
Yes! Email Frank at frank@fleetfeetcincy.com or call the store. We provide individual attention even in a group setting.
10. I’ve run marathons before—is this program for me?
Yes! We train all abilities. Experienced runners often learn new techniques and enjoy running with our supportive community.
11. I use a run/walk method—does your program support that?
Yes! We embrace run/walk training and teach the most effective ways to use it, whether temporary or permanent.
12. Am I crazy for signing up?
Not at all! People run for many reasons—fitness, personal challenge, causes, or just for fun. It’s life-changing and incredibly rewarding.
13. Can children join?
Yes, ages 16+ can join with a parent accompanying them, same pace and mileage. No discounted rate.
14. Can I bring strollers or dogs?
For safety, strollers and dogs are not allowed during training runs.
