We've partnered with Golden Apple to make them our official Charity of the Month for April because every student deserves a great teacher.
We believe great teachers are the building blocks of a brighter future. We create and support such teachers through scholarships, professional development, and awards.
What is Golden Apple?
Golden Apple is a non-profit organization that inspires, develops and supports teaching excellence in Illinois schools-of-need - where great teachers are needed the most. Golden Apple believes, and research supports, that the most critical contributor to student achievement is the quality of the teacher in a classroom. Golden Apple is dedicated to providing exceptional preparation for teachers and school leaders at all stages of their careers.
The Golden Apple Scholars of Illinois is the largest program of Golden Apple. The program starts by recruiting motivated future educators from diverse backgrounds who have a desire to teach in Illinois schools-of-need. During their college and first years of teaching, Golden Apple provides advanced teacher preparation and mentoring to ensure their lasting success in challenging teaching environments. In return for tuition support and years of mentoring from our master teachers, Golden Apple Scholars commit to teaching in an Illinois school-of-need for five years, and most stay longer.
- 82% of Golden Apple Scholars who enter teaching stay at least 5 years, compared to the Illinois teacher average of 54%
- Golden Apple Scholars reflect the students we serve: 60% are first-generation college students; 50% are from underrepresented communities and 40% are from low-income families.
- 97% of principals with Scholars on their staff want to hire more Scholars within the next three years
- 82% of principals rated Scholars as more prepared to teach on Day One in the classroom
Golden Apple’s work is critical and the demand is great.
Studies show that there is a shortage of qualified, enthusiastic teachers entering the profession, and a particular shortage of minority and bilingual teachers. Shortages of diverse, high-quality teachers are expected to reach the hundreds of thousands nationally by 2020. In Illinois, the crisis is especially acute -- there are more than 3,400 schools-of-need. To meet this need, Golden Apple is aiming to grow our Scholar cohorts significantly.
Golden Apple Scholars reflect the students they serve.
Students need teachers who have similar backgrounds and experiences to serve as role models and give them the hope of a promising future.
Because every student deserves a great teacher, Golden Apple recognizes and awards 10 outstanding Pre-K-3rd grade teachers each year.
The Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching & Leadership celebrates outstanding teachers and school leaders and invites those awarded the platform to further the charity's mission.
On May 19, 2018, Golden Apple will honor 10 outstanding Pre-K-3rd grade teachers and one exemplary principal at the 33rd Annual Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching & Leadership at WTTW Studios in Chicago.
