Presentation on Lower Extremity Stress Fractures in Runners
Monday, Oct 19th at 7:15pm
As part of our Medical Monday Series of presentations, Matthew Cavagnaro, MD, will be presenting at Fleet Feet Sports on lower extremity stress fractures in runners.
Stress fractures of the lower extremity are common injuries among individuals who participate in endurance, high load-bearing activities such as running, military and aerobic exercise and therefore require practitioner expertise in diagnosis and management. Stress fractures in the lower extremity account for 80%–90% of all stress fractures, representing between 0.7% and 20% of all sports medicine injuries. Specifically, stress fracture incidence in runners approaches 16% of all runner-related injuries. Accurate diagnosis for stress fractures is dependent on the anatomical area and early recognition is the optimal goal to minimize the potential for microfractures to become macrofractures. Runners with an understanding of the signs and symptoms of stress fractures will have awareness that will allow them to recognize a problem early and avoid further overuse and fracture progression.
Presenting will be Matthew Cavagnaro, MD, a member of the Buffalo Medical Group’s Department of Orthopedic Surgery. He recently completed an Orthopedic Sports Medicine Fellowship at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic, Los Angeles where he served as assistant team physician for the Los Angeles Kings, the Los Angeles Lakers, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and Loyola Marymount University.
The Western New York native earned a Doctor of Medicine from the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia.
Dr. Cavagnaro treats a wide variety of orthopedic issues including shoulder, knee, hip and elbow injuries; and he uses a minimally invasive surgical approach when appropriate. Some of the injuries Dr. Cavagnaro treats include shoulder instability and arthritis, rotator cuff tears, shoulder and elbow problems in throwing athletes, hip labral tears and impingement, hip arthritis, and all ligamentous and meniscal knee injuries as well as knee arthritis.
