Great shoes
They arrived pretty quickly and were exactly what we wanted. The true review will come in summer 2026 when the shoes will be used to walk golf courses. Now we just need teh Mafate in a waterproof version for morning dew :)
Great long haul shoe
Great cushion, great grip. Another banger from Hoka and always the fastest shipping on the newest colorways!
Long Hauler
The updates have created a more roomy and secure fit (especially in the heal), over the Mafate Speed 4. It is heavier and has lost some of that aggressive feel as I found in the Speed 4, but is very smooth and comfortable chewing up the mileage. As I had read in other reviews before my purchase, the shorter, thinner tongue can dig into the foot and it does at times, so there has been some playing around with lacing tension at the start or during a longer run over 10 miles to alleviate. Overall I am pleased with the fit and feel of this version.
Tongue/laces are no good.
I stepped up from the speed goats after 4 pairs because they're just not durable. I heard great things about the new Mafete. The soles are awesome. Super cushioned for bombing down hills, but still pretty springy for the flats. I bought them for a 100k race. I ran them several times before between 6 and 10 miles and they felt great. In the race after 20 miles or so the laces kept cinching and the tongue kept slipping down killing the top of my foot. I had to make the shoe very loose to alleviate the pressure on the top of my foot.
Trail running shoes
I love them, so comfortable, you pay for what you get, and they are worth every penny! I’ve been a life long Nike fan, but these shoes are comparable in feel and style. These are my second pair of hokas and I guarantee there will be more to come!
Think Speedgoat 4
This shoe feels very similar to the Speedgoat 4s before they slimmed them down. They feel great with one exception. The good, they are super cushioned and the tread is super grippy, almost to fault. The not great, the tongue is too short and can dig into your foot. This seems to improve as the shoes get some miles on them, mine are currently at 100 miles or so. Overall I’m happy with them.
