Features

Don’t limit yourself to the road or trails—choose both in the Altra Outroad.

The Altra Outroad is the perfect hybrid road-to-trail shoe. Based off of the Altra Rivera, this shoe has the same Altra EGO™ midsole for a responsive, yet cushioned ride and is built on Altra’s slim fit last, which fits narrower than other Altra shoes yet still has the rounded FootShaped ™ toe box.

Take on those gravel roads and single track trails, the MaxTrac™ outsole and multi-direction lug pattern are perfect to handle trail conditions but won’t feel cumbersome while on the road.

A light and thin upper in the front allows for breathability, while it is a bit more protective and cushioned in the heel to give you a secure, lockdown feel. Plus, it has a reinforced toe to protect against rocks and branches. The Outroad is less bulky than other trail shoes to give you the familiar step-in feel of road shoes, which reviewers loved in our Altra Outroad review.

The Altra Outroad lets you run wherever the road takes you.

Who It’s Best For

The Altra Outroad is a great shoe for runners who run trails only a couple of times a month or have a race where there is a combination of road and trails.

Why You’ll Love It

You will love that the Altra Outroad feels like a road shoe, but has the traction and grip of a trail shoe. You will also love that you can run comfortably on both road and trail.

I had such high hopes for this shoe!

Altra really should be embarrassed by this shoe. The tricky marketing of an undersized shoe and the upper that lasts about 120 miles before ripping out were a turn off within the first month of ownership. Having said that I found the cushioning and grip to be great for the transition from asphalt to my local gravel roads. The colors they offer are an excellent change from my normal boring gray or blue I get stuck with from having large feet. In the end the destroyed uppers didn't keep me from putting 600 miles on them before retiring them to fishing duty. I think I'll go back to the Provision for my short run shoe and keep buying Paradigm's for the long runs. For the trails Lone Peaks and the Olympus will stay too.

Perfect for exactly what it's meant to be

Put 400 miles on my first pair and will retire them soon. These shoes do (and did) exactly what they're supposed to but you'll likely be disappointed if you expect them to be a dedicated long mile high comfort road shoe or alternatively if you expect them to be a trail shoe that can tackle super technical muddy or exposed rock face trail. The surfaces where these shoes performed the best in my opinion included: packed dirt with that real fine ground up gravel on top any rails to trail type surface non-technical singletrack (some roots and rocks are fine and elevation changes are fine but my fat foot taxed the upper on anything mildly interesting). Sidewalk and asphalt felt just as adequate as any other pair of shoes you could get from a run specialty store. Fit is a bit narrower than Altra's other trail offerings but my normal Altra Timp OG size (just as a frame of reference) still fit my fat hobbit feet.

Solid pair of shoes

I have tried many different shoes over the years and have finally found my brand. I love Altras! They fit my feet so well and are very comfortable. I started out with the Rivera 2 shoes and decide that I also wanted a pair of trail shoes too. The Outroads feel pretty similar to the Riveras but have heavier-duty tread for trails. I have only run about 20 miles in them so far primarily on gravel paths but so far I really like them. They are snug on the back of my foot but provide lots of room for my toes. Big fan!
