Upper Body Workout for Runners

Duration: 20 minutes (plus extra time to learn the exercises)

Gear: PVC pipe, broom stick or walking stick, light hand weights (about 5 lbs), a step, bench or chair for tricep dips

Purpose: Upper body strength is crucial to proper running mechanics and form. Today's workout with Ashley will work on that strength.

Workout: Begin with a warm up, then complete three rounds of each circuit.

Warm up:

  • 10 - 15 arm rotations with your pipe or stick
  • 15 - 20 air squats

Strength circuit: 3 rounds each

  • 10 - 15 Tricep extensions on a step, bench or chair
  • 8 push ups
  • 3 push up rows with a hand weight
