The Best Daily Trainers of 2022
With so many running shoes all designed for different goals, it can be overwhelming to find the right fit for your feet and your training. One shoe every runner should have in their quiver is a daily trainer – a shoe that can be worn for the bulk of your training, from moderate runs to recovery miles and long runs.
Fleet Feet reviewers have tested over 60 pairs of shoes this year, the majority of which are classified as daily trainers. We broke down our favorite daily trainers of 2022 into four categories: neutral daily trainers, stability trainers, energetic trainers and our max-cushion trainers. We even asked our Instagram community to vote for their favorites! These are our most highly recommended training shoes for 2022.
1. Favorite Neutral Daily Trainers
Neutral daily trainers cater towards runners with rigid arches who feel best in flexible shoes. We asked our Instagram followers to decide between four of our favorites: The HOKA Mach 5, the Brooks Ghost 15, the Saucony Ride 15 and the Diadora Volo 2. Our Instagram community picked the Brooks Ghost 15. Fleet Feet reviewers voted the HOKA Mach 5 as their favorite neutral daily trainer. We love how soft and springy it is. It’s lighter than any of the other shoes we listed, and its gentle rocker shape makes it stand out amongst the other shoes in its class.
“The HOKA Mach 5 is so light, soft and springy. The PROFLY+ foam feels much more responsive than what I remember from previous versions of the Mach,” Nate says.
2. Favorite Stability Daily Trainers
Stability shoes offer additional support to reduce the effects of overpronation. They typically feel firmer and stiffer than neutral shoes. They’re ideal for runners who have flexible arches who need a more rigid platform. If you’re not sure whether your arches are rigid or flexible, head into your local Fleet Feet for an expert fitting.
We asked our followers to choose between our favorite stability shoes: The Saucony Endorphin Shift 3, New Balance 860v13, Mizuno Wave Inspire 18 and the On Cloudflyer 4. They chose the Saucony Endorphin Shift 3 as their favorite stability daily trainer of 2022. When choosing our favorite stability trainer, we wanted to pick a shoe that offers medial support to reduce the effects of overpronation without feeling too rigid. We landed on the On Cloudflyer 4. The On Cloudflyer has been greatly improved upon since the last iteration. The CloudTec cushioning – a series of pods underfoot – feels smoother than in previous versions and offers a unique ride compared to other shoes in this category.
“On has really improved the feel of their CloudTec cushioning and it shows in the Cloudflyer 4,” Kate says. “It still has the clean aesthetic that often attracts people to On running shoes, but now your stride will feel as smooth as it looks!”
3. Favorite Max-cushioned Daily Trainers
Maximum-cushioned shoes are just what they sound like – they offer an extra hefty dose of cushioning and higher stack height to absorb impact and protect your feet from the shock of pounding the pavement for miles on end.
We asked followers to choose between four of our favorite max-cushioned shoes – the Altra Via Olympus, the Brooks Glycerin 20, the New Balance More v4 and the HOKA Bondi 8. Their favorite max-cushioned daily trainer is Brooks Glycerin 20. Our favorite max-cushioned daily trainer of 2022 is the New Balance More v4. Our reviewers loved the New Balance More v4 because the cushioning felt so light and airy. We felt it was softer and a bit more flexible than the other shoes on this list. Fleet Feet reviewer Kate loved them so much, she wore them every day during her most recent photoshoot in Chicago, in addition to her daily runs.
“I’m a fan of the More v4," Kate says. "The upper gives that bucket-seat sensation where my foot sits down into the shoe and is surrounded by the upper part of the foam. It helps the shoe to feel stable."
4. Most Energetic Daily Trainers
While these shoes can’t compete with traditional carbon-plated racers in terms of energy response, they’re well-suited for days when you want a little more pep in your step and they’re more durable and affordable.
We asked our Instagram audience to choose between four options – the Saucony Endorphin Speed 3, the ASICS Novablast 3, the Brooks Hyperion Tempo and the New Balance SuperComp Trainer. They chose the Saucony Endorphin Speed 3 as the most energetic daily trainer of 2022. Fleet Feet reviewers loved the New Balance SuperComp Trainer as our favorite energetic daily trainer of 2022. It’s hard to compete with this shoe in terms of energy return, thanks to its carbon-fiber plate. But because this shoe is durable and cushioned enough to log plenty of miles, we still felt comfortable categorizing it as a daily trainer as opposed to a racing shoe.
“I didn’t even feel like I was running in the New Balance SuperComp Trainer, I felt like I was gliding," Caroline says. "The thick slab of FuelCell foam is so springy and bouncy it makes each stride feel effortless. I love how soft yet responsive the cushioning is, too. It can be tough to blend those two elements into one shoe but New Balance does it perfectly here."
