Gear Review: On Lumos Collection

As we inch towards the winter months when those early-morning and late-afternoon runs get darker and darker, it’s important to keep visibility in mind.

On reimagined their bestselling performance running apparel to be not only stylish but safety-conscious, too. The On Lumos Collection features the same bestselling pieces you know and love, with highly reflective detailing to help others see you in the dark. While the Lumos Collection shines when the sun goes down, it turns into a sleek, low-profile outfit in the daytime, making it perfect for running errands.

Fleet Feet reviewers tested the Weather Jacket Lumos, the Tights Long Lumos and the Active Shorts Lumos during chilly, pre-dawn runs and late-night walks with the dog. Here’s what you can expect.

On Weather Jacket Lumos

Just because the light is fading doesn’t mean your pace has to. The On Weather Jacket Lumos keeps you visible in the dark and cozy in all types of weather. This special edition version of the On Weather Jacket features lightweight materials, reflective detailing and a handy chest pocket.

“This jacket has a stylish and multi-functional look for a visibility piece,” Kate says. “I love that I can wear it and be visible to oncoming traffic without feeling like a conspicuous member of the safety patrol. The areas of visibility are well-placed on the areas of greatest movement, which makes you more visible to onlookers.”

The reflective detailing is mostly confined to the chest, shoulders and arms, the areas that move the most while you run. The hood also features reflective material along with an overhead bill that can keep the rain and wind out of your eyes.

“I’m a big fan of the adjustable hood,” Max says. “I was able to cinch the bungee cord at the top for a snug, tight fit. Plus, the additional visor flap on the hood helps drain the water away from my eyes.”

The On Weather Jacket Lumos is treated with a DWR (durable water-repellent) layer, a polymer treatment that shrugs off water. On describes this Weather Jacket as being suited for “light rain,” so keep that in mind when checking your weather app before you head out. And if you start feeling warm, you can even pack the jacket away into its chest pocket!

Overall, reviewers enjoyed their runs in the On Weather Jacket Lumos.

“There was no better time to test out this jacket than on a chilly shakeout run in the Windy City,” Caroline says. “It was cold and gusty, but the jacket kept me comfortable. The material dulled the effects of the harsh winds and kept me warm without getting overheated while running. This is a perfect choice for chilly days where you need a lightweight layer but don’t want to overheat.”

On Tights Long Lumos

The On Tights Long got a makeover with the Lumos Collection. Now featuring standout patterns and extra visibility strips, these tights are made to keep you moving in the dark.

The Tights Long Lumos feature several thoughtful details to make your run as seamless as possible. A rear pocket and a key loop make it easy to store your essentials, while ankle zippers and a stretchy waistband help you personalize the fit.

“I love the feel of the fabric of these tights on my skin,” Nate says. “They fit well and feel true to size. The added reflectors on the bottom give me some extra visibility in lower light conditions, too.”

Brushed fabric—fabric in which the surface fibers have been raised to create extra texture—offers extra warmth during frigid runs. Ribbed fabric right above the knee makes it easier to move around freely in the Tights Long Lumos.

“These tights move well with my body on the run and definitely hold in heat,” Kate says. “I wore these for a 33-degree morning run and they kept me feeling toasty. I’d recommend these for running in temperatures around freezing and under.”

Reviewers appreciated the added visibility for dark runs and walks, as well.

“The key feature of these tights is the reflectivity detailing,” Max says. “The detailing is more tasteful than other brands and definitely creates a cool factor that I appreciate. The reflectivity is bold enough to feel seen and minimal enough to feel confident in how I look.”

Women’s Active Shorts Lumos

Just because the days are getting shorter doesn’t necessarily mean they’re getting colder. The On Active Shorts Lumos are designed for runners who live in warmer climates, like our Florida-based reviewer, Caroline.

The On Active Shorts Lumos feature a 2-in-1 design with a long, compressive liner featuring two side pockets and loose, lightweight outer shorts.

“These fit and feel great on the run. The liner feels smooth and buttery against my skin, and the outer shorts are so light and airy that I don’t feel constricted while running. I really only felt the liner layer and forgot that the shorts were there,” Caroline says. “ It’s really nice to have some visibility apparel that’s geared towards warm weather. It still gets darker here in the winters, but it doesn’t get cold.”
