Altra Experience Flow 3 Review: Smooth Miles Ahead

The Altra Experience Flow 3 is remarkably similar to the Flow 2, with some minor tweaks to the upper and heel collar.

The Altra Experience Flow 3

All shoes are reviewed by the Fleet Feet tester team, which represents a wide variety of goals, foot shapes, running locations and terrains. Reviewers pound the pavement, climb the hills, tackle the trails, then come together to compare notes. Debates ensue over the feel of the cushioning, the purpose of the shoe, and how it compares to last year’s model. While each reviewer has their own individual preferences, we hope that capturing our debates will help you make an informed decision.

Find your flow in the new Altra Experience Flow 3, available February 1. With responsive cushioning and a gentle rocker shape, the Flow 3 promises to deliver a smooth, easy ride that’s built for cruising. Of course, Fleet Feet Reviewers had to test this shoe out for ourselves. Read on to hear our thoughts.

Step into smooth strides

The Altra Experience Flow 3

The Altra Experience Flow 3 midsole uses the same EGO™ P35 foam as the previous version. Altra’s Product Director, Alex Lind, told us in a 2025 interview that this compound makes the shoe feel light and responsive while still maintaining a cushioned ride.

“I wore the Experience Flow 3 on a number of runs. I’ve been dealing with an injury, so most runs were between three and five miles, easy,” says Travis, who’s loved all three versions of the Experience Flow. “In terms of cushioning, I really enjoy how the Flow 3 feels — very similar to the prior version. My legs have been responding best to shoes that are a bit firmer with a broad base of support, and the Flow fits that category well. The cushioning isn’t propulsive, but the firmer feel provides a natural sense of responsiveness that gives the ride some momentum.”

I agree with Travis — I found the Flow 3 to feel generally firm with a solid, grounded feel thanks to a wide base and Altra’s Standard FootShape™ fit. This means the shoe’s toebox is wider than traditional running shoes, allowing my toes to splay to expand my base of support.

Up until 2023, Altra was known for their strict zero-drop policy on all running shoes. All of their shoes had a zero-millimeter heel-to-toe drop, meaning your heel and forefoot were level with each other when wearing the shoe. The Experience Flow line has a 4-millimeter offset, meaning your heel is 4 millimeters higher than your toes while wearing the shoe. This is still considered to be a low heel-to-toe drop by industry standards, and it delivers a balanced feel on the run.

How much space is too much?

The Altra Experience Flow 3

As I mentioned above, the Experience Flow features Altra’s Standard FootShape™ fit, providing ample space for your toes. All Altra running shoes offer one of three different FootShape™ Fits — Original, Standard and Slim. The Original is the roomiest of all three options, while the Slim is the narrowest. The Standard option falls in the middle, making it perfect if you’re looking for a bit of extra wiggle room without too much extra space.

The Flow 3 fits true to size, and I appreciated the redesigned heel collar that added a bit of padding for extra comfort.

While Travis agreed that the Flow 3 fits true to size, he noticed the upper felt more voluminous than previous iterations.

“The Flow 3 feels a little wider, deeper, and slightly longer,” he says. “However, the difference isn’t significant enough that I would size it down. It just felt slightly off to me while running. The shape felt a bit boxier and didn’t sit quite right around my midfoot. It was still comfortable enough, but the last two versions felt like they were made for my feet. This makes the shoe more accommodating for runners with wider or more voluminous feet.”

Not sure about the width or volume of your feet? Your best bet will be to head into your local Fleet Feet. Fleet Feet outfitters use 3D fit id® foot scanning technology to gather information about your feet and the support they need by taking precise measurements of your foot length, width and arch height, so you can learn a lot about your feet while you’re there.

The Altra Experience Flow 3 is remarkably similar to the Flow 2, with some minor tweaks to the upper and heel collar. The Flow 3 uses an engineered mesh upper that’s designed to add breathability while still maintaining a secure fit. However, the new material appears to have added a bit of weight (half an ounce for the women’s model and almost a full ounce for the men’s).

“The Experience Flow has been one of my favorite shoes over the past couple of editions, so I was really excited to give the new model a try,” says Travis. “The Flow 3 keeps a lot of the same elements as the previous version overall. The upper feels breathable and comfortable, and the midsole feels essentially the same. The biggest difference I noticed is how the fit feels a little wider and more voluminous.”

If you’re like Travis and you’ve been an Altra Experience Flow fan for the past few years, you’ll likely enjoy the latest version, too. However, you may want to try on the shoe in-person at your local Fleet Feet to ensure a proper fit.

Travis and I found the Flow 3 to feel most similar to the New Balance Rebel v5 and the Karhu Ikoni 3.5. Both the Flow and the Rebel deliver a lightweight ride and a low heel-to-toe drop. You’ll notice that we classify the Flow 3 as “smooth” and the Rebel v5 as “springy,” due to the Rebel’s PEBA-blended midsole — an ultra-lightweight, high-performance material seen in most racing super shoes.

While the Flow 3 does have a bit of energy to it, it’s more in line with the Karhu Ikoni 3.5. Both shoes fall into our “smooth” category, which means the cushioning profile is softer and not designed to elicit any performance benefits. The Flow 3 and Ikoni 3.5 both have similar stack heights, too. Stack height refers to the amount of the shoe’s material between your feet and the ground.

Who is the Altra Experience Flow 3 best for?

We recommend the Flow 3 for runners seeking a firm yet lively midsole. Thanks to a low heel-to-toe drop and a broad base, this shoe feels plenty stable, too.

“I think the Flow 3 is an exceptionally reliable option for runners who love the traditional Altra fit but aren’t ready or interested in going fully zero drop,” says Travis. “For runners seeking a more natural-feeling daily trainer rather than a highly cushioned behemoth, I would definitely recommend this shoe. It works well for long runs and recovery runs, but if you need to pick up the pace, it can handle that too.”

Travis and I both used this shoe for gym workouts, too, and appreciated the extra ground contact and stability. While that’s definitely not its designated use case, I enjoy having a shoe that can handle both.
