Six Reasons to Join the Share the Run Challenge

Runners set out on a run.

With the holidays long gone but the cold still lingering, the dreary days of winter are upon us. In most parts of the country, it can be harder than ever to find the motivation to run when the roads are slick, the sky is gray and the trees are brown and barren.

Whether you’re an experienced runner aiming to increase your fitness or a newbie trying to build a running habit that sticks, we’ve got the perfect challenge for you. We’ve teamed up with Saucony and Black Girls RUN! to bring you the Share the Run Challenge, a four-week mileage challenge during the entire month of February to help you set and reach your goals.

The best part of Share the Run? You get to set your own mileage goal. All you have to do is set a distance from 20 miles to 100 that you’d like to run or walk for the month of February.

In case you’re not sold yet, here are six reasons to Share the Run with us this February.

1. Build healthy habits

It’s no secret that building a regular walking or running habit has numerous health benefits. Walking and running regularly has been proven to improve cardiovascular fitness, boost your immune system, and can even reduce stress, among other things.

2. Share encouragement and accountability

In order to build healthy habits, a little bit of accountability goes a long way. Sure, we can hold ourselves accountable when setting and chasing down our goals, but extrinsic motivation will give you that extra boost you need when it’s cold and dark out and you simply don’t feel like getting out the door.

When you sign up for Share the Run, you can join as an individual or join a team—like your local Fleet Feet store, for instance. By logging your miles on the Share the Run RunSignUp page, you can keep track of your progress and how you stack up on the leaderboard as a team or as an individual.

3. Support a good cause

Registration for Share the Run is free, but every participant has the option to donate to Black Girls RUN! when signing up. Black Girls RUN! provides resources and community for Black Women to get more active together. They offer 5K training programs and group runs, as well as motivation and support, and they have chapters across the country.

4. Teamwork makes the dreamwork

Research shows that running with a group can make you happier. All the more reason to join your local Fleet Feet Team! When signing up, click “yes” when asked if you want to join or create a team. After signing a waiver, the screen will display a drop down menu of the teams you can join. Scroll through until you find your local Fleet Feet–every store or market will have one. In-store events will vary, so be sure to check with your local Fleet Feet.
